Dr Mitchell Tanner commenced studying a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 2003 after completing his schooling at Singleton High School the year before. Dr Tanner completed his medical degree in 2008 and commenced his career within the Huner New England Health network at The Maitland Hospital.
Dr Tanner commenced General Practice training in 2010, returning to Singleton as a Registrar in 2011. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2012.
Dr Tanner has been a Visting Medical Officer at Singleton District Hospital since 2011, working in Emergency Medicine and Inpatient Wards during this time.
Dr Tanner owned and operated Civic Medical in Singleton from 2014, expanding from a sole practitioner General Practice to the thriving, multi doctor practice it became over 10 years. The amalgamation of Civic Medical with Singleton Medical Centre and Skin Clinic has allowed Dr Tanner to focus more on patient care and clinical medicine rather than the business aspects associated with practice ownership.
Dr Tanner has a broad ranging expertise across all areas of General Practice. He enjoys providing care in internal medicine, paediatrics, skin cancer medicine and surgery, men’s and women’s health, mental health, occupational medicine, and emergency medicine.
Dr Tanner has been awarded the newly created Rural Generalist qualification by the RACGP, recognising his expertise in Emergency Medicine and Small Town Rural General Practice.
Mitchell is a Singleton local, having lived in town his entire life. He completed all of his schooling in Singleton and continued to live in Singleton whilst studying at the University of Newcastle and completing his Junior Medical Officer years at Maitland.
Mitchell lives locally with his wife, son and daughter, and is actively engaged in many community organisations. He is heavily involved with Singleton Rugby Club at both senior and junior levels, still playing and previously coaching. He occasionally still turns out for Valley in the local cricket competition.
Despite stating retirement has come at the end of each rugby season, Mitchell is always likely to go around for just one more year by the time the next season starts.
